Bogg & Son Manchester
Post by emmajane0511 »
Hi I wonder if you can help.
My mother has a Piano which we believed was a Russell & Russell, as this is what is on the piano lid. Upon further inspection we found it was made by W. Bogg & Son Manchester and has a serial number 8113.
We are trying to date the Piano as my Grandfather brought it in the 1950's(believing it to be new) for £100.00 which was a lot of money back then.
We cannot seem to find W Bogg anywhere on the internet so would really appreciate it if anyone knows about them.
Thanks

I am not convinced that either of these names were the real maker. Bogg was a retailer by 1886, some time after 1871, and continued well into the 1900s, I will try to narrow that down later. There were several piano makers and dealers named Russell, but the firm of "Russell & Russell" were retailers with branches in several major towns and cities in Scotland and England, including Glasgow, Leeds, London, Mansfield, Manchester, & Worksop. They were still in business in 1938, but not listed in 1951.
Can you give me the complete, exact wording? Serial number dates are not available for either of these names, so without photos, we can't tell you anything about the individual piano.

Bogg & Son still existed in 1928, and are listed in Musique Adresses Universel, but were gone by 1938, they do not appear in the Music Trades directory of that year.
