H. Rudolph, Giessen Square Piano

Post by 123c777 »

Are you familiar with this piano maker? It says Giessen underneath H. Rudolph
and the serial # is 922. It is on octagonal legs with wheels, and it is similar
in appearance to Broadwood's 1817 Square. I can't seem to find any history on
the maker, plus I'd like to know the value of unrestored 19th century german square
pianos. Thank you for your expertise, it is greatly appreciated!

I am not sure which particular piano you mean by "Broadwood's 1817 square", and I am not just being picky about the difference between octagonal and hexagonal, I can't recall Broadwoods using octagonal legs at all, or hexagonal legs this early. I would usually have expected 6 slim, fluted legs.

Obviously, Rudolph was from Giessen, Germany, but I have no further details about him so far. Value of unrestored Victorian square pianos here in Britain is very little, but 1817 might be more interesting to collectors. Ask your tuner to test it. Any chance of seeing what it looks like?
