I know of a piano mover from the South East who was recently clocked massively overweight. They are currently have some time off work as a result. Be careful out there guys! Check your weight limits.

Any mover using 3.5ton vans will be running overweight at some point, panel van's have a payload of 1.1-1.3 tons, a Luton van with a tail lift has a pay load of 800kgs-900kgs, once you add a couple of sets of piano wheels, covers, ramps etc then a couple of guys and fill up with fuel you can knock 250kgs of the payload, so fill it with pianos and you will be overweight, if or when you are caught the fine used to be £1000. Per ton for the company, £100. Per ton for the driver (not sure what it is now), if you have an operator’s licence this will be noted and you will have a visit vosa, if you get caught overweight you will have to tranship on to another van and pay a fine, you will not be taken off the road for any longer, at Piano Logistics we operate a couple of 3.5ton vans for concert work, fully equipped and with one concert grand, flight case for legs and three guys the van weighs in at 3.4 tons hence the reason we run LGVs.

Interesting stuff.
So how many U3s do you think I can carry in my Sprinter 311 CDI Luton van? That's ignoring any ramps or piano wheels.

about 4 depending on body specification of the van, if it has a heavy grp body then 3, how many do you put on it?

Oh it's never full as I only deliver about 1 piano per fortnight. I regret buying it earlier this year as I now mainly use as a run around. I was planning to do local piano removals a couple of evenings per week to help cover my personal living expenses. But that didn't work. You can see I tried to sell the van on this forum a few weeks ago.

If they start doing piano TUNERS for being overweight I'll have to retire...

Whenever I read that, I was thinking along the same lines - penalising piano tuners for being 16 stone!

Trust Mark to confuse us!
