The few I have seen have the serial printed on the soundboard, under the strings, with a lot of other information.

Re: Serial Number on Erste produktiv-genossenschaft wien

This is worth a try...

Sometimes it is best to drop the music rest flat, then slide the music rest towards you, and remove it altogether from the piano to get a good view of the soundboard edges (behind where the music rest lays flat). On some grands (eg Monington & Weston), I found the serial number by accident before tuning it. Once I removed the music rest, I stood where Middle C is, then stretched forward beyond the dampers, and at the edge of the soundboard (under the strings), the serial number was there!
But normally, the serial number may be under the bass string dampers.

If its not there, then there may be clues inside, but I would get a tuner to remove a grand mechanism, or you may risk broken hammers.
