Which Upright for Jazz?
Hi guys,
Just wanted to ask some advice on upright pianos.
Im looking to buy one mainly for jazz/blues playing.
Can anyone recommend a few which have a good action for this type of playing?
Any advice much appreciated.
Thank you!

depends on your budget a bright U3 is a good one
it has the speed and control of the action with the longer keys, the tone in the treble tends to be pure which seem to be the most desirable for Jazz
A good reconditioned c1930 model V Steinway can be nice myself I don't like model V Steinway but for Jazz they do sing well

I agree with Barrie that a bright U3 could be a good option.
I always tend to suggest bright U3s are better for pop or jazz whereas the mellower U3s have a more refined sound which tends to be more suited to classical.
The U1 (shorter in height than a U3) tends to have a consistently bright, punchier tone than your average U3. I think the U1 sound has a bit more "attitude" than a U3 which could be good for jazz. It depends what style of jazz you play I suppose.
If you need smooth, velvety, atmospheric sounds (like for dinner jazz) then I'd go for a U3. If it was for hard hitting, gritty jazz with some dirty funk thrown in then a U1 (or a bright U3) would be worth a look.
I've got 5 or 6 U1s and dozens of U3s in stock
Feel free to send me a PM if you want any more specific info
Happy hunting!
