Steinway & Sons 1912 Grand Model A

Post by woren »

I have a Steinway & Sons 1912 Grand Model A piano at my school. I am trying to determine the history of the instrument. The serial number is 159778. Is there any other information I can find on this instrument?

You coulkd try contacting Steinway themselves, but I don't think they care much about their history, as not much paperwork seems to have been kept.
I play for my own amazement... :piano;

The serial number can only provide a possible year of manufacture, whuich you already seem to have, so any other information depends on consulting the manufacturers' archives.

The above link will show you a book available about Steinway & Sons, the author is Ronald V. Ratcliffe. I own this book, and its excellent providing an in-depth history of Steinway since 1853. It also demonstrates all the patent designs over the years, the history of the instrument, and the materials they use in their construction. The book is also fully illustrated with over 200 photos & diagrams. Priced around £60.00 (ex p&p).

The book also demonstrates their special skills, and shows various skilled craftsmen at working carving exquisite designs onto grand piano legs - and much much more - and there are about 216 pages to feast your eyes onto. A good quality book.

However the book does not specifically list the history of a particular instrument standing in a school hall or a particular venue - only its general history may be offered. As Bill says, the serial number will only reveal the approx. age of a piano, nothing else.

A valuable book and well worth the buy!
