My comparisons in that price range, were knabe, steinbach, conover cable, wertheim etc. Internally the Essex came up trumps with an all wooden action, no plastic, and the timber used within the piano. Important factors to be considered apart from place of manufactuer when purchasing.
Not here to convert you folks to Essex, pianos are such a personal choice.
Thought the British love the Chappell or Kemble.
The sound of the bechstein, or even a bluthner, the latter given some consideration by me, but the sound of this new Essex piano was almost to the tone of that old bluthner.
I like the action, on my paticular piano, as it is not light, nor is it heavy.
Hardly an admirable comparison by piano lovers, but due to the sound of that old bluthner, I wanted to capture a new piano, with less money, and this Essex was for me.
Hesitant about purchase of a piano built in china, or korea. Most people are.

Re: Essex grand
Chappell as a brand hasn't been marketed here since the '90s, and there's only one model of Kemble grand which is not widely stocked. It's identical to a Yamaha anyway!musicinme wrote:

The information in regard to Chappell pianos I did not know. At times chappell piano are available here in australia, early 1900s or prior to 1970, for sale at auctions or on ebay.
Kemble I have seen mentioned on this forum before, and my thoughts were that this was a good make of piano.
Yamaha are very popular in australia as is kawai.

last year, i was able to source a Chappell upright piano for a pupil of mine. It was about 120 cm high, modern style case, built around 1975. Its solid as a rock and has a nice touch and action. It used to be the rehearsal piano in a theatre but the hammers were in good nick despite this.
Price? £140 including delivery. No joke. One off, of course!
