Tuners Beware

Post by Otto »

I've just been listening to Desert Island Discs and this week's guest was Richard Ingrams (Private Eye and the Oldie) - repeats Sunday.

His one book was "A manual on how to tune pianos" to go along with his luxury of "a grand piano" (make not specified).

Is this the end of Piano Tuning as we know it today?

Will a new army of satirical humourists find an alternative occupation and start taking away the hard-earned crusts from the profession?

Only if he gets washed ashore on a desert island and a piano and the book make it as well. Which seems unlikely; I think you can sleep soundly tonight...
Apart from which, he didn't ask for a tuning crank. What will he use - teeth?

I was a tad upset when on David Blunkett's resignation from the cabinet, the newsman at that time ,stated that it was thought David would "only amount to a piano tuner"...bloody nerve, I call that defformation of occupation!!!

'only amount to a piano tuner' is a crap thing to say!

A piano tuner is one of the most important people in the music business, and a good tuner is like gold dust.

I have a book on piano tuning, read it, and attempted to tune an old upright that I have but dont use. I got some nice unisons, but it took me two days to get a scale that sounded anything like equal temperament, not to mention setting the pin properly!

So no, tuners need not beware. You've survived the onset of digital pianos, a few poxy comments in a paper or on radio isn't going to hurt that much.
