John Shenstone & Son London

Post by Jamie »

Hi. I have an upright piano, cast iron frame with John Shenstone & Son London plastered on the front and Joshua Marshall & Co Ltd on the lower r/h side. The number 200 is circled on the right hand side of the frame at the front. I have found reference to both names on this site but have been unable to find a piano with both names on, although to be honest I have not looked that hard. As I understand it, Marshall's were the wholesaler and Shenstone the manufacturer? Anyhow, can anybody shed a bit of light on this issue? I can forward photo's if required. The piano is about to be scrapped..!!!

Thanks very much

Shed light on what exactly? Shenstone made it, and Marshall sold it, that's the only reason why both names are there. No wholesaler was involved, unless you call the manufacturer a wholesaler. No proper lists of dates of Shenstone's numbers are available, but 200 wouldn't be a serial number. Marshall Ltd. were around from the 1890s to at least the 1950s, so that doesn't help us with dates. You can email photos to me.
