Steinberg Baby Grand Age

Post by comet319 »

Hi there. I have recently acquired a Steinberg Baby Grand and I am trying to determine its age and where it was made. After much searching the internet (including this forum) I have been able to glean pieces of information but nothing definitive. It was purchased by my wife's grandfather circa 1940 in Amsterdam and was understood to be new at the time. I have had much difficulty finding a serial number on it but have managed to find the number 38188 (hand written). It also has the number 188 (again hand written) on a couple of removable pieces and I understand the the last three digits of the serial number were often placed on such pieces so it is probably that 38188 is the serial number. It has a Renner action which has the number 370300 stamped on it as well as 4446 stamped on either end. I guess my first thought is that the 38 and 37 prefixes on these numbers may represent the year but this may be a gross assumption on my behalf. I don't see any mention of Berlin on it and I understand that it was approx 1937/38 when Steinberg left Berlin. If anyone is able to offer any information on this at all or where I might look for further information I would be greatly appreciative.

There were at least four different piano firms called Steinberg, plus a Steinburg. Although it IS history, anything that "modern" is low priority on our limited budget, and you need information I haven't dug up yet, even if you can work out which Steinberg it is. Have a look at the Datemarks page at www.PianoGen.org
