Adult beginners

Has anybody used the Alfred's Basic Adult Beginners Course, and if so, what did you think of it (either as a teacher or as a pupil)?

I've never used them, but I've looked at them at various customers' homes. And without exception, each adult complained that they were bored with the books. They certainly seem a litttle dry...
