Spencer / Ellis & Co piano

Post by jobartram »

I have just aquired a piano. Under the keyboard lid it says Spencer London. Just above the keys it says manufactured by Ellis & Co, Hornsey. Inside the top in the centre is a brass plate which has Spencer patents and the number 27673. Lastly the only other number that I can find is 33124 which is on a wooden upright inside the frame at the back on the right hand side, and the number is found at the bottom of the wooden upright. I am looking for imformation on the age of the piano and whether there is anything special I should do to care for the piano. I am only a hobbiest player, and my daughter will also be playing it. All I know of it is that it has not been used for a couple of years and has been stored in a garage, I have saved it from being used as fire wood. Thanks for any imformation in advance, Jo

I've heard of a Spencer piano with this number from two previous owners, but they didn't mention Ellis. Are you sure it says "Manufactured by" and not "Manufactured for"? The number suggests 1896, which is also about the right period for Ellis.
