knight upright

Post by js2864 »

I have just bought an old piano sold to me privately for a couple of hundred as a scruffy but very playable knight uprright.... and I am interested to know if it is a real "knight" and if so what age and type it is. The casing was drawn all over in a school so the varnish has been stripped to remove the worst of the writing and the name is therefore missing.
Serial number is 62132/FM/KT10. 11
It has only two pedals, which have an oblong metal kick plate screwed on behind them. This might be original or it might have been added to prevent damage by kicking I suppose...so perhaps there could have been a third pedal oringinally

Any advice welcome
many thanks

Have a look at the Datemarks page at www.PianoGen.org for clues.

Bill
thanks for quick reply...I have tried that already and am stuck. Is there anywhere I can get this serial number looked up? I have seen you date other knights from the five digit number. Are you able to tell me the source you used to do that. Is there a charge?
many thanks

The number won't tell you if it is a Knight piano, but if it is, it would be 1978. It should have a label under the bottom keys, and the Knight name is probably cast into the iron frame somewhere. The pedals are probably fairly distinctive too, but I do not have any pictures of them. They come out of the hole, then downwards before coming forward, so they are nearer tp the floor.
