Underfloor heating

Post by Madasafish »

Hello I have recently purchased a Yamaha U1 and the only place it can go is in the hallway which has underfloor heating. This comes on in the winter in the mornings for about three hours just to warm the tiles up - what can I do to protect my piano - my husband suggested placing trays of water underneath the piano to keep the humidity up!! does anyone else have a piano on underfloor heated area?

Get your tuner to Fit a piano life saver

Also you can put fome padded tinfoil under the piano

under floor heating will kill your piano if not protected

In homes that have under floor heating or wide swings in humidity we strongly recommend a Piano Life Saver as Hydracell units cannot cope with this type of direct dry heat or swings in humidity. Most manufactures recommend that your piano should reside in a temperate atmosphere where relative humidity ranges from 45% to 65%. In homes that have under floor heating or wide swings in humidity are strongly recommended a Piano Life Saver.
The Piano Life Saver System consists of one or more dehumidifier rods to lower humidity, one or more humidifiers to add humidity, and a humidistat which senses whether the wooden parts of the piano are too moist or too dry. Through a cycling action, the humidistat is calibrated to create a separate environment within the piano, producing a range of humidity which, in turn, provides stable moisture content in the wooden parts. This constant cycling action stabilises pitch and protects the piano from deterioration. Used in conjunction with the system to combat extreme air movement in the room, a grand undercover or vertical backside cover may be mounted on the piano to further stabilize the pitch. In particular, covers are recommended for use with the system when the piano is located in a church, institutional, or commercial building.
Greentech are specialists in a range of Underfloor Heating Services.

I've been quoted approx 600 € (540 pounds) and have been waiting since Oct to have a Piano Life Saver fitted as the under-floor heating is playing havoc with the tuning.
Local S&S tech has been snowed under - with work - and literally with the white stuff for a number of days - and that's in SW France!
I was playing the piano in a zoo, when the elephant burst into tears. I said, "Don't you recognize the tune?" He replied, "No, I recognize the ivories!"

Just as a follow up ... I had a Dampp Chaser system fitted to our Bechstein Academy upright since the humidity swings were causing quite some shifts in tuning. Since fitting it some months ago I have monitored the humidity inside the piano (on the side away from the humidifying water tank, Since that time the humidity has been constant in the range 52-57% RH. The humidity of the room has generally been in the range 30-40% RH (this is with a small humidifying unit - otherwise the humidity would drop to 20% RH. In general the tuning is now stable so I am well pleased with this DC system.
I have not experienced the regulation during the summer - where the RH of the room will be somewhat higher (~ 70% RH on average)

Upright 122 & S.W. France.
At that price Barry, it looks as if I should have offered you a FlyBe ticket and B&B....
