Steinway Concert Grand
I was in a piano shop in Pescara, Italy, on Friday, toying with the idea of buying an upright for my house out there.
The Yamahas and Kawais were automatically 30% off list price (list price of a Kawai K5 was €3,900) with setting up, delivery and leather stool included. So I make that about £1850. Sounds about right?
They had a "May" there, which is "selected by Schimmel". The man said it was German; I pointed out that it said "selected by" not "made by" and was it not made in China? He went away to check and said that yes, it was made "in Asia". China was probably too good....it was horrible the upper base totally overpowered the treble.
Anyway, in the midst of all this potential sale, I got to playing one of their Steinway concert grands. It totally blew me away. The individual consituents, taken separately (i.e. by striking the odd note) such as touch tone etc, didn't seem exceptional; but when I sat down to play, the clarity and the hidden tone colours, the superbly responsive touch etc, were out of this world.
List price €116.000. I am now taking commissions for dispatching unwanted wifes/husbands/business associates etc . All interested parties can send me a pm.
Just gotta have one of those babies

I agree 100 per cent with you over the Steinway Model D. There's one in my local concert hall which I'm lucky enough to play every now and again. Quite simply it leaves any other make of piano standing. The experience of playing is transformed because the instrument seems to breathe life into every phrase you play on it.
Beautiful beautiful instruments
Beautiful beautiful instruments
Yup,
I agree that it's the finest instrument I've ever played.
Apparently the 9' 6" Chickerings built in the 1930's are on a par, and it's rumoured that the Autralian Stuart concert grand is even better.
I've tried Raviolis but they didn't do a lot for me, to be honest.
I waited 47 years before I got my Model D, and I would agree, it flatters your playing so, so much. It's just so easy to bring out any part.
Yes, I know I'm lucky, and if anyone wants a go they can send me a pm. (I live down the M4 corridor)
