Quandary...

Post by Gill the Piano »

...do I restore my 1929 Bluthner upright, or do I snap up a barely-used Zimmermann upright? I play a lot, and like to beat Rachmaninov out of it sometimes. Don't know what model number the Z is, but it isn't as tall as my Bluthner; it does have a lovely tone, though. The offer came out of the blue as I was leaving the house having tuned the Z (they're moving abroad, probably). Don't know what to do...any suggestions?

Spend the money on the next beer festival

The Bluthner will be an unknown result even by the best if the Zimmermann is very good deal that would be my option after the beer festival

Assume it's a late Bechstein Zimmermann, not a Commie one?!

As long as you've checked out how well it tunes (some Zs have pressure-bar issues in that they're not correctly set and they're fiddly to tune in the octave 2 up from Middle C) and you like it, I'd seriously consider it.

Lovely build, excellent materials and top grade of Renner action. 80% as good as a Bechy but less than half price. I'm guessing you'll not even pay as much as that, so much as I like old Blüthners, I'd be tempted to take the Z.

Now what's all this talk of beer?

I don't know why Barrie goes on about beer; he knows I don't drink.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... I think the Z has the edge, I just wanted an opinion or two from people whose opinion is informed, so ta, lads. It's a win-win, really; I can get the pianos moved on the cheap, my sister-in-law will have the Bluey on the strict understanding that it's a loan not a gimme, (just in case!).
So plenty of money left for a few pints of Rebellion, hopefully! O wot a giveaway...you were fooled up until then, weren't you?
