Yamaha "grey imports"

Post by deno »

Are there any problems associated with buying a 1984 Yamaha YUS piano which has recently been imported from Japan? In particular, is the wood seasoned for our centrally heated homes.
Also, the serial number is about 3.6 million. From reading other posts I get the impression that this age of piano may be suspect; is this true?
The seller is a reputable dealer (I think!), how much should I expect to pay?

Many thanks

Phil

Any second piano from Yamaha or any make could have problems with the wood being dried out if it has not been looked after

Late 70 Yamaha did start to season their pianos However, the loops tend to be a problem with Yamahas of that age I would get a tuner to give it the once over.

As to price that is difficult you can line up 3 Yamahas all made in the same year one may be a gem the others could be dogs so the price would reflect that. I have seen them go for as little as £1900.00 and as much as £2900.00 for a mid 80s

Yes.

4 million is better, but the differences between a 3 million series and 4 million YUS are fewer than the differences between a 3M and 4M U1/U3

Is he VAT registered?
Is he a real piano dealer or technician?
Is delivery, warranty and initial tuning included?
Is he a pretend dealer fiddling with pianos in his spare time?
Is it in a showroom?

All this is relevant.
