Grotrian Steinweg 1945

Post by mused1 »

I'm going to take a look at a 6' Grotrian Steinweg that has come up for sale. I'm told its c.1945 and in very good condition, though not restored. Asking price is about ?6500. The case is mahogany, quite plain, not as ornate as some of the earlier models I've seen pictures of.

My question is, would a piano factory in Germany at the end of the war have been able to maintain their previously high standards of materials and craftmanship, given the pressure on personnel and raw materials at that time - is anyone familiar with Grotrians of this period?

I know that I must see and play the piano to make a judgment, but I'd appreciate any pointers from those more knowledgeable than myself before I make a long trip to see it!

Check the Grotrian web site to validate the date of manufacture.

Very unlikely to be a 1945, but not impossible. Build quality will be pre-war standard, because it will in effect be a pre-war piano mothballed. Grotrian were not producing during the WW2 years.

What's the serial number?

Thanks to both replies. Serial number refers to 1938 -39 as you suggest, so now I just have to go and see it!
