difference between maple action and mahogony action?

Post by Diana »

Still looking at Kawai pianos -- I am told that mahogony action is better than maple action. Can somebody explain how does this manifests in the feel and sound of a piano?

I think you're listening to too much sales hype and reading too many brochures.

The question is, I think, about hammers rather than the action itself.

Mahogany cored hammers are generally considered to be best, but this results in no really perceptable difference in tone quality since it's the hammer felt, not the core which is critical.

It's just that the highest quality German hammers generally use mahogany or other expensive hardwood, so the Japanese feel that it's a feature that should be fitted to their 'deluxe' models! Bear in mind though that the entire hammer fitted to these pianos may well be of better quality, although not necessarily because of the core material.
