advice for moving into grade 1

Hi everyone,
just wondering if you could help me.
I am new to teaching the piano, and I was wondering what your opinons are on the standard of playing needed for grade 1, i.e. what book would you say is a good spring board for leading onto grade 1. I teach a nine year old boy, he is pretty competant, (would be more if he practised) we are nearing the end of the me and my piano book 2. Would anyone advise me not moving to grade one after this? and if so can you reccommend a book which would be suitable for a bright boy? or do you think me and my piano book 2 is good enough grounding?
thanks, any opinions would be great!
