My first post on these forums, but maybe you can help me? I have been lucky enough to acquire my first piano (something that I have always wanted) from a rather unusual source. However, the piano came "as is" with no history whatsoever. I have now got the piano home and spent a little time in the Web trying to establish the make and its age. I believe that it maybe a Bechstein; it has a number stamped into the "soundboard" and a corresponding number stamped into the wooden frame - "4743". There is also the number "5" cast into the metal frame on the lower portion of the piano. There is another number, "M15624" also stamped into the wooden frame? Under the keyboard "cover"? is a panel marked up as below? Any thoughts and advice on my "baby" would be gratefully received. Thank You, Jacqui.

I can assure you that this is certainly not a Bechstein, and I'm puzzled as to why you would think that. The name on the front is quite clear, although we have no actual proof that Morleys made their own instruments about a century ago. They may have bought them from wholesalers. The number preceded by M is a Morley stock number. The wooden pedals are one of several features which would not be found in a Bechstein. Have a look at the 'Datemarks' and 'Piano Names' links at pianogen.org
