Damaged Action Rail - Schwander - Herrburger Brooks
Post by sylviaclarkefarnum »
Last month I was the owner of an out-of-tune Brasted piano. Today I have a bag of hammers, a bag of whippens, a bag of dampers and an empty piano cabinet. The piano has sentimental value, so I’d like to be able to repair it. When the piano tuner disassembled the action, he discovered that the action rail (? I’m trying to come to grips with these terms - the long wooden bar with holes to attach the hammers, etc) – had deteriorated. It is in a mess – the screws had rusted and the wood is split. He tried using bigger screws, but this just made matters worse. Is it possible to get a replacement action rail? The metal frame of the action is stamped “Schwander” and “Herrburger Brooks” is stamped on the wooden action rail itself (I hope I’m describing these parts correctly. “76 7022 P” is inscribed on the edge of the action rail. The piano is an upright with 85 keys, marked “Brasted London” and the serial number 164084 is stamped on the sound board. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Get him/Her to send it to Langer Actions former Herrburger Brooks and they will make one to the pattern. However, it may better get a new action - New Hammers, Dampers and Whipens

Thanks - I'd traced Herrburger Brooks as far as Langer, but couldn't find a contact for them on the Internet. There's no reply on their phone but they may be at lunch. I'm in Trinidad, but my husband is flying to London tomorrow and I'm hoping that maybe ha can take the action rail with him. The tuner says the other action parts are in fair condition, but I'll still look at the possibility of a whole new action. Thank you very much for your quick and positive response! Sylvia.

I very much appreciate the help that you and your forum have given me. I was able to get a replacement action rail made when others had advised me to give up on my piano. Thanks! Sylvia.
