This is a piano history question, and should be posted on that forum. Three-digit numbers are hardly ever serial numbers, although they are sometimes the last 3 digits of the real number. See

Most of G. Ajello's pianos have the dampers located above the hammers, and these will never ever damp efficiently, being too close to the top ends of the strings. 85 notes was the normal range for most british and european pianos over a very long period.
