hi there,
You best bet is probably to find a music shop with a good range of pianos and try a few of them out. You will probably find some good pianos in the £800+ mark.
I've seen a few new pianos for about £400-500 you will find the pianos a bit of a compromise between price and sound
I think buying a digital piano is similar to buying a computer- it's worth going for the best you can afford.
Are you prepared to look at second hand pianos?
