Restoring Piano Cabinet

Post by Rosalie »

I have a Black 3 Crown Ronisch Upright Piano. There are some fillegree (not sure of spelling!)etchings. Otherwise quite plain. I would love to have it repolished to look like new again. Our tuner says french polishers don't like doing black pianos & has suggested getting it lacquered instead of french polished - What do you think? Is he correct in saying that polishers are not keen on doing black pianos?

FP don’t like black pianos as there is more work hiding any blemishes but most of them spray these days and pull over with a rubber. Polyester looks bad on an old piano to my eyes

Restoring Black Cabinet

Thanks for replying.
So what you are saying is that it would be much better to get a proper french polish done? Our tuner says it ia a "glorious" Piano & would be well worth spending money on it. He also said that the workings of it are in an amazing good condition for its age. We don't want to do anything to detract from it. What is the best way of going about finding a reliable french polisher who could do a good job with black? Do you have any hints?
