Whitfields Imperial Piano

Post by ljlord »

I have a Whitfields Imperial Upright Piano - It has been in the family since the late 1800's. The Serial No I believe is 17845 though there is a second number - 8597

It is black, has a cast iron frame, Ivory keys and 3 floral panels but is minus its candle holders!! It is a bit battered and bruised as it has travelled backwards and forwards from Cheshire to London to Shropshire to London and so on, but still has a lovely tone, when we can keep it in a stable enough atmosphere to hold its tuning.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, my piano tuner always gets excited when he comes round but has been unable to source any info for me.

Many Thanks

Is this the London, Birmingham or Huddersfield firm? Is there a town or address? The sconces (candle-holders) would seem to put it before about 1920, I have no other clues, since I don't know what the iron frame is like, or any interior details. See

According to my information they were known as Whitfields, Johnson & Co. until at least 1899, and Whitfields Limited by 1911. See
