Hammer Restoration

Post by Jim »

Could anyone advise on whether I can improve the sound of my piano by working on the hammers (e.g. sanding, toning)?

Alternatively what does it cost for new hammers (assuming I will fit them myself)?

Some pictures of the hammers etc

I've had the piano about 30 years and it had just been restrung by the guy I bought it off (who was a professional tuner and restorer). I don't know how old it was at the time, though.

I'm sure the piano sounds harsher now than when I first got it, and wondered if this could be due to the hammers hardening up (the piano is played on average maybe 5 hours per week).

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks in advance.

The hammer need refacing your tuner should be able to do that the piano will sound brighter and may need toning down However, it will need the tone evening out after refacing

Refacing is taking the cuts out of the hammers and reshaping the hammer
