new hammers a few questions

Post by oceanobsession »

Hi folks , im seriously thinking about replacing the hammers on my upright piano , looking at abel they do a standard set that are the same size , they also drill the hammers at no extra cost to your measerments , the rake angle standard is 87.5 , ive
measered mine which is about right , sitting in front of the piano there is 32 bass hammers leaning over to the left 69 degrees . middle sction 24 hammers leaning over to the right 110 degrees to 93 degrees . the remainder to 88 vertical or 90 degrees . ive measered everything but a little worried ive got everthing right . anyone carried out this job . any pointers . phil.

Able also do a recovering service. You just need to send hammers away to them a lot easier than putting new heads on if you've never done it before.
Are you putting a light or heavy hammer on if you put too heavy a hammer on it will bugger up the inertia too light and won't have the power.

You can ask them to pre voice them as well

Thanks barrie . for your advice , funny thing my piano has the same frame as the ibach
i think ibach purchased schidmayer so makes sense . i know they both sound great
i think the hammers have gone hard but sound better when its raining or damp . another
dry day and certan notes sound glassy metalic hard to get needles into them . abel do
a standard set which is the same size. and will bore all the holes to your spec at no extra cost , they are hornbeam
so should weigh the same , natural felt £30 more for the set . im hoping it will help with
the break 3to2 strings . which many pianos suffer with and maybe people put lacour on the hammers trying to improve things often making them worse in that area . apparently curling tongs are great for removing the old hammers . i paid a grand for the piano . £250 for new hammers . im confident i can replace and line them up . so seems like the way to go . phil.

He tried a deep voicing first. Or if they're really harsh you could do steam voicing A lot cheaper.
