Andre Stein Square

Post by franciskey »

Bill,

Thanks so much for your info on the Clementi Square. Great website! Recently, I have renewed an old interest in historic keyboards with the acquisition of an Andre Stein square, circa 1820. It has six ornately-carved rounded legs and rosewood veneer but is otherwise very similar to the Andre Stein square at the National Music Museum in South Dakota -

The number in printed on paper and glued to the bottom of the case is 585. Any thoughts on the Andre Stein squares in general and the exact age of this one in particular?

Frank
Alexander Wilson was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland. In 1782 his name was included in a list of Paisley weavers, along with one James Renfrew. In America, he “passed many a pleasant hour” with a Philadelphia piano maker.
