Monington and Weston baby grand

Please could you date more accurately our piano serial no 35494 and also what the letters and number 'PEG no 7' before the serial number means?

I have found a list of dates and serial numbers and 35494 fits into 1911-1920 range of 33001 - 43101 so I'm assuming its nearer to 1911?

Interestingly the serial number was on the underneath of the piano inscribed in the gold metal work and only found when dusting!!

In my book your number fits between 1910 and 1915. Interpolation gives your piano a manufacture date in the middle of 1911.

I have a copy of the Musician's Piano Atlas, plus supplements one and two that Barrie kindly supplied. They can be purchased from this site, click on Piano Accessories Shop in the main site menu and then click on piano history books.

I'm sorry but I do not recognise the meaning of PEG no.7 .

I have been very confused by the so-called serial number underneath our piano which appeared to be 6 numbers rather than 5 and I thought it was Peg no 7 35494. However I was wrong! After crawling under the piano and taking a photo it says REG NO 735494 which ties in with this earlier post on this site from 2006!!

Could you please confirm the date of our piano and any further information to clarify who made it.

Would there be a serial number as well as this reg number? If so I cannot find it.
Additionally I had the piano valued and it came back as between £400-£500 and was dated as 1960-1970 taking the first number of 7 into account for the serial number (so 735494) I thought why 6 figures not 5 but didnt question the supposedly knowledgeable piano expert!!

I also found a number cast into the frame - Reg No. 735494 and the action is by HERRBIRGER & BROOKS LTD. Will that data aid in determination of the age of the piano?

Sorry to make a minor correction to your correction, Herrburger merged with Brooks in 1920, so your piano is no earlier than that. The registered design number 735494 is known to have been used by Monington & Weston around 1937, so they may have made the piano, in which case the number would suggest 1934.
