Chappell & Co piano age? 1812?

Hi All

First post. My guitar teacher recently acquired a Chappell & Co piano and is the process of trying to determine the age thereof.

From my own research, there are tables that reference years based on the serial number, however these all start with a series of 2000 from 1840.

This piano has a serial number of 1512 on the right side of the frame. The Feurich.com website, allows you to enter a serial number and returns a production year of 1812.

Is this possible? I have hopefully attached a picture of both the piano and serial number.

Appreciate both the time assistance from the experts out there.

Most pianos have several numbers inside, and although the main serial number can be imprinted in the end of the case like this, you certainly do not have an 1812 piano. It has an iron frame, and is more likely to be from the 1900s. Have a look at

Thank you for your response. In tuning the piano, the original serial number was found and it dates back to 1904.

Quite amazing that after a 115 years it’s still in working order and has an owner that is it’s current custodian and appreciates it’s age and history.
