It is often difficult to verify the claims made by firms that they were "manufacturers". Certainly, some bought pianos from wholesalers, and sold them under their own names, or other aliases. See

1886 Van Gruisen & Son were only at 27 Bold Street. By 1894, they were at 27 & 29 Bold Street, where they remained in 1899. By 1911, they also had premises at 109a to 113, Kirkdale Road, Kirdale, Liverpool. The 1914 Music Trades Directory describes them as "Piano, American Organ & Harmonium dealers, also music", with no referecne to manufacture. Alfred Dolge "Pianos and their makers", 1911, seems only to list bona fide makers, and this firm is not shown.
