Once visited there on our way up to Scotland. They must have relied on mail order because it was quite a long way out of Carlisle.

New music that I have bought this year (three books about £15 each) were not usual stock items at my local music shop but I ordered them there to give them the business rather than one of the internet giants. I don't want my local music shop to go out of business.

In addition to the disappearance of music shops I also worry about the availability of tuners. Are sufficient numbers of young people being trained to eventually take over ?

it's not just tuners musical interment repairs across the spectrum is in decline. Young ones do not want to train. The ones that are in training tend to be older students, there is one in her 50s but she is keen and is coming to our regulating classes in June.

There are two places in the UK that do training for piano tuners both are not recognised by the Education Department so you have to be self-funding, we are hoping that will soon change as one is looking at doing it as HND level that will allow a student to get funding

There is the American correspondence course a guy in Preston has just set up who has done it, I am assuming he is using an ETD not his ears

But we do have a big shortage in some areas and in others, most of the tuners are pushing 60 + like me I will review my retirement options when I'm 91

When I started at 21, my projected retirement age was 60. Then it moved to 65. Now I'm 57, retirement is supposed to be 67. By the time I'm 67 it'll be 97... I'll retire when either my ears or my thumbs give out.

Your still a spring chicken then One of the guys who instructed me is still tuning 2 a day at 90 the other is 86 is just dong a few a month but if your health is still there why not pays for the beer
