Modern vs Older makes of upright - recommendations?
Post by johnsikorski »
Hi! I have just sold my Yamaha G2 grand and am looking to buy as nice an upright as £6k (ish) would buy. My priorities are a deep, rich sound in the bass plus smooth action (not stiff, as in my Yamaha grand).
Pianos I have enjoyed playing in the past are: a Steinway grand (smooth action), and the gigantic old uprights you find in the USA. Am I best to look for a Steinway upright, or how do other makes (e.g. Boston, Brodman, Bechstein etc.) compare, according to the above spec/budget? Any suggestions welcome. Edinburgh based. Thanks :)

All the names you suggest are good.
Also have a look at the Kawai range, you could buy a new K5 Kawai for that money (or very near).

I rate the newer Zimmermann uprights - worth having a look. Taken over by Bechstein in 1992. I've never tuned a bad one - but some of the dealers here will probably know more than I do. Don't bother with the Cold War ones - just the post Bechstein takeover models.
I play for my own amazement...
