E.Belling Upright Piano
Post by Idefriginit »
Hi there,
I purchased an upright piano from E.Belling at a garage sale here in Australia for $50. It's construction is what I assume is oak with mahogany veneer. The bit where the strings are attached to (what's the name of this?) seems to be made from brass and on here it has the serial number - 15474.

As far as I know the piano came to Australia in 1927 and was in a music store in maybe Sydney where the store burned down leaving the piano untouched. It then went to an orphanage and the history of it after 1948 is unknown up until approximately 5yrs ago when it was purchased by the fellow I bought it off.
I am not after a valuation, just the history :)

From the photo, I would guess it is Edwardian, so have a look at
http://pianohistory.info/edwardian.html
I have no information about E. Belling or his pianos. Australia seems to have gone through a phase of having genuine German pianos with fake German names, see
http://pianohistory.info/names.html
As far as I am aware, no dates of their serial numbers are available. There may be dates inside, see
http://pianohistory.info/datemarks.html
If your tuner considers it safe to remove the action, it may be marked on the rear with the action maker's name and number, and I may be able to date this.
