Spaethe

Post by Susie2005 »

Good Morning

I have been offered a Spaethe upright piano, I've been advised its overstrung and underdamper. Dates from 1909.

Just wondering if this is a good maker? We currently have an old J R Walter. My son is working toward grade 2 and is ready to move to a better model. Any advice re Spaethe would be appreciated as you can tell I'm somewhat of a novice!

Kind regards

If you upgrading, I would not recommend anything as old as this. Unrestored, they have very little value, and can have major problems. Fully restored, they are very expensive. There have been a number of piano firms with similar names, so I can't tell you anything by the surname. In general, if your son plays, he should be able to judge whether he likes the instrument, and that is more important than piano names, which are often meaningless.

Hi Bill

Thank you for your help. Its a Willhiem Spaethe. I think as you suggest see how it plays being comfortable with the instrument as you say is the most important thing.

Thanks again

I was still editing the post when you answered, so you may want to read it again.
