It's a bit chilly in here ...

Post by Gooday »

Had my new piano for a few months now - I really like it and am unlikely ever to change it, so I'm really keen not to damage it in anyway.

So I've turned the radiators in the room that contains it (and not much else) :) to very low - got a bit chilly for the few months before Christmas. Seems to be keeping in tune very well - I've got used to putting a jumper on to go in and play and I'm probably saving a bit on fuel cost too :)

Am I being a bit over cautious?

yes
Our mission in life is to tune customers--not pianos.

Any fool can make a piano-- it needs a tuner to put the music in it

Might be a good idea to buy a hygrometer/thermometer for your room - then you can monitor your room without damaging your piano on a long term basis. Temp should be about 18 degrees, and relative humidity about 55%. If it gets too cold in there, your piano will go sharp quite quickly, and if too cold, you risk the room becoming damp - and this is the killer for pianos.... ie rusty strings, sticking keys etc.
