George Russell date if possible please?
Post by nitram_tpr »
Hi guys,
I'd love to have a date for this piano please?
I've tried to find out when George Russell won the gold at the Brussels expo but my initial searches have found nothing.
This was bought by my wifes mother in either '47 or '49 from J.B Cramer & co.
Larger pics are available here if required:

Thanks for any help :)

It would be tempting to think it is a Kemble piano because of the letter K preceding the number, but there are two different ones, and not in the right place or the right form. Russell became part of "The Cramer Agenices" and it is presumed that Cramers made them. Although Russell shouted loudly about the medal, I haven't found any record of Russell or Cramer at Brussels, and I haven't managed to find lists of old Brussells expositions, but he seems to have started saying this after the 1914 war, possibly when Cramer took over the name.
My guess is 1923, any further clues will be hidden inside.

Hi Martin
Not sure if you will get ''a date'' as such - as there seems to be no serial number records for Russell pianos. By the cabinet design/ square tapered column legs.... its looks very typically 1920's - 1930's. Inside the piano, if you remove the front panel, you might find a 'tuners date' on the keys (or on the side of the first key).... and occasionally Bill can date them if there is a number at the back of the mechanism.... however, if the bridle tapes are worn or broken, leave the mechanism well alone!
Hope that helps
Colin

Thanks for the replies guys :)
We are going to get it tuned in the near future, we'll ask the tuner if he can find anything for us inside that might assist in the dating.
