Hey, fellow piano slimmers! I just read this thread for the first time and I share the love! Earlier this year I was horrified when I needed a 40-inch waist. I’ve found Weight-Watchers to be a total pain in the arsular region, so I went for broke and joined the local gym. I still don’t do nearly enough but I’ve built-up to three 45-minute sessions each week on a combination of cross-trainer, treadmill, rowing machine and weights. It’s definitely helping and I’d encourage anyone trying to lose weight to give it a go.
I was the last person on God’s wide earth who ever thought they’d darken the doors of a gym but it was well worth the initial embarrassment. I thought the place would be full of rippling muscle-men (and there are some, of course) but mostly it’s just people like me trying to shift some wobble.
And now for the real toughie – I stopped drinking earlier this month  Yes, really. I was drinking on average a bottle per night, which is obviously bad all-round  but also a bottle is around 500 calories (or roughly a quarter of the recommended calorie intake for a geezer). I was struggling to resist the urge to open a bottle right now, but reading this thread has given me more motivation so I’ve poured the bloody stuff down the sink. WE CAN DO IT!!!!! 8) 8) 8)

 I loved that reply Openwood!

I really love the cross-trainer! It almost feels like you're having way too much fun to be exercising at all... that is until you walk past any reflective doors or glass and realise that Hellboy isn't releasing another film - it's just you walking around with a face like the moon!

My face is just like that - indistinguishable from my buttocks!
The image of John Prescott has leaped, unbidden, into my mind :o Mate, it can't be THAT bad....

Hello Dave

Hope you and Mrs Brum are well. I am not very good with change so will take me a few goes to get used to the new look site. Did you receive the p.m. about facebook as I can't see a reply, will miss the chats, but I will have to get used to posting again.

Shame you don't feel like dieting at the moment. I am sure you will get back into the swing of it. January is a funny time of year, can be a bit depressing.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Kimble.

Just concentrate on the decorating, eschew the ladder, then you'll get taller, your height/weight ratio will improve and therefore you will have - technically - lost weight. Viola!
I'm so glad you say that about Facebook, Dave; I can't work it out either. Thanks - you've made me feel much better1 :D

Decorating the house provides you with a great workout and you're bound to lose weight - provided you don't replenish with all the wrong stuff! I have a mate who used to be 22 stone but despite being 6'2'', he looked it and had a huge spare tyre you could bounce pennies off! He carried a lot of weight all over his body - chest, waist, arms, legs. You must be very tall because you don't look anything like a 20 stone man!

I used to have a Hi5 account but it was such a boring setup that I cancelled my account.
Not that fussed on Facebook either. Myspace is so much better.

Yes, I've been even more manically busy than usual and so far this year has been every bit as dire as I thought it would be, hence the absence, sorry! My weight is pretty much as it should be now so the maintenance side of it kicks in from here, whooppee! I've lost just over 7 stone and am a size 10/12 so now I'm surrounded by people telling me not to lose any more -can't win, can we?! I shall be behind you every step of the way, dear boy - good luck!

Running? Far too energetic imho! I go for a brisk walk three times a week (kiddies and weather permitting!) and built it up slowly. I also stuff myself with all the things I am "allowed" and try to avoid the naughties. Getting the mind set is the major battle won - once you've got it the rest is much easier. (And I know it's a LOT easier said than done!)

I believe nearly any expert you ask will tell you the whole issue with yo-yo dieting is the psychology bit of it. Personally, I think naughty food is every bit as addictive as tobacco or alcohol. Getting it off is one thing, keeping it off is quite another

My wedding photos provide more than ample coverage of the "before" but I haven't got around to the "after" photos yet - that will probably happen at my parent's Golden Anniversary lunch next month.(I always did do things backwards!) I do, however have the pair of trousers I wore to my first Weight Watchers meeting last year so one of these days I'll put them on just for a giggle and see how many paces I can take before they end up around my ankles!I can strongly recommend WW's Belgian chocolate mousse - only 2 points and seriously scrummy!

Wahoo! :P Well done, old bean! That's over half a stone in a fortnight, well done. I've found having a three year old who wakes you up at 3 in the morning is another good (though thoroughly unrecommended) way of shifting the pounds - it means you're on the go 24/7! Keep it up.

Sounds like I'm the reverse. Still today has been o.k. Though still got a headache again. Also seems swine flu has broken out in the office, fortunately I've avoided it for 2 weeks (working off site), so looks like I'll be working from home/sites for the next few weeks. <back on topic!> Handy I *might* try to get a bit of bike riding done.

How do you make dhal? Lentils always seem such hard work to me...soak them at midnight on the cusp of Aries and Pisces on a full moon... Is there a short cut? I'm an emergency cook; everything has to be v. simple and accomplished in 30 seconds or less - but, paradoxically, without the aid of a microwave because I don't trust 'em...

My daughter lost a total of 3st in weight between 18th July and the beginning of November by good old-fashioned calorie counting :D

There are a couple of free to join websites which not only allow you to record your daily food intake, but do all the calorie counting for you. She downloaded an 'app' to her iPod but you can do it via your PC if you prefer.

One of them also has a support forum - google My Fitness Pal for the link. The one that Caroline used was www.shapeupclub.com

In all honesty I'm rather failing to watch what I eat this week ... lets see if the scales agree when I go to my mums house (I don't not have scales at my house as I'd be obsessively checking them). I'm rubbish at doing exercise and have ate out twice this week so far and had a KFC ... 1130 calories apparantely!! So you have been warned!!

Dave

Caroline was 18 in December but three years ago she took ill and now has CFS. She was formally diagnosed in June and was weighed at the hospital. We knew that a combination of extreme fatigue and comfort eating had put on some weight but she wasn't aware of quite how much. She decided that the only person to help her was herself and signed up to Shape up Club as being the only site that would accept membership from someone under the age of 18.

She lost on average 3lbs per week and once she had lost the first stone, started to gradually introduce exercise - just walking to begin with and the results have been amazing to say the least. She started off at 13st 2lbs and at the beginning of November had reached 10st 7lbs. She stopped counting calories at that point but has continued to lose weight as the enforced portion control has stayed with her. She now weighs 10st exactly.

I would be tempted to sign up now Dave and attack the problem on two fronts. Even if you only use Shape up to give you a better idea of the relationship between quantity and calories. It also monitors your fat, protein and carb intake - Caroline found the best results from high protein and lower carbs.
