Moving piano up stairs - disassemble possible?
Post by pianooldham »
Hi - I am currently looking at moving to a house with three floors, with a large lounge on the top floor. Wanting the piano to go on the top floor, I'm wondering what options I have to get it up there.
The stairs are fairly tight (the house is 200 years old) and have a 180 degree turn from the 1st to the 2nd floor.
Obviously, without getting an opinion from a piano mover, I am unsure whether it will be possible to physically shift the piano upstairs.
I've heard one or two reports of actually disassembling a piano and then reconstructing it again.
So, Im wondering:
1. Is this physically possible?
2. Will deconstructing the piano make it any easier to transport up two flights of stairs?
3. Any idea how much this would cost, assuming the piano has already been delivered to ground floor?
Cheers,
Richard
btw piano is likely to be a U3, but would be interested if anyone knows about taking a grand apart too!

It may be cheaper to take the piano in though an upstairs window and crane it in these guys are very good Take a look at there photo Gallery

As to dissembling on a U3 you are only looking at the top door, fall, bottom door and action with out going to major expense which would work out more expensive than getting a crane as to grands even less can be removed

Thanks Barrie,
Another problem which I didnt mention is that the house has mullins windows so there is no hope of anything going through windows
I'd be interested if anyone has anything on this, even if we are talking silly amounts of money. I must have the piano up there, no matter what it costs or the effort involved!
Cheers

Most pianos will go up most stairs I have even been on call when the took a 7 Bechstein up 3 set of stairs with the tail pointing upwards they even made a special slipper for the keybed to fit inpianooldham wrote: I'd be interested if anyone has anything on this, even if we are talking silly amounts of money.
