Creaky Schwander action

Post by Bill Kibby »

I'm doing some work on an 1898 Bechstein grand with a Schwander tied action. Recently, it developed creaking noises which arise from friction between the jacks and rollers (knuckles if you're american) and although the leather is in good condition (possibly renewed) the jacks seem to be the source of the trouble. They are varnished, and of course, varnish is sticky, squeaky stuff. Winslip blacklead won't adhere to the varnish, and it's amazing to me that it has survived for over a century without this problem cropping up. I have seen older and younger Schwander actions with the usual blacklead on the jacks, have I got to remove all the varnish to solve this problem. Any suggestions?
