I’ve read the history of the Kirkman piano’s on the internet. It’s very interesting, because I have a Kirkman piano, but I don’t know anything about it. Can anyone tell me more about my beloved instrument? My mother get’s it from her father and she wants to know how old the instrument is and maybe some other information like an estimated value or interesting facts. Maybe you can help me?

Best regards

The number suggests that it was made in 1871, and for a change, these numbers seem to be somewhere near the truth. See

Hi,
here are some photaos from a similar (but older) Kirkman-piano, maybe interesting for you.

Actually, although it is very similar in construction, the case is later, and the number suggests 1879, so I have no idea why they think it is 1855. The other number suggests 1864, but is unlikely to be the main one.

Kirkman 1871

Post by pete »

Dear sir Kibby,

Can you give me an idea of the value of the Kirkman piano in its actual condition now. I have noticed that two hammers are broken in the line but we found them back inside the instrument. Needs to be tuned, if
still possible.
Furniture is in a generally good looking condition as you can see on the pictures.
Can it be sold in the UK ? or anywhere else ?

Best regards.

Although I am endlessly fascinated by victorian pianos, they are almost impossible to sell at all in the UK, unless they are fully restored, which puts them beyond many people's price range. That's why I am offered several every year for nothing, I only wish we had the funds for museum space! See
