R. Hawkins of London

Post by anne_coll »

We are looking for more information on our piano. It says on the front that it is an "upright iron grand full trichord check action". It was manufactured by R Hawkins of London for Paterson Sons & Co of Glasgow. There is a number on the top of the board holding the hammers. This is: G33608. On the bottom of the right hand side of the iron frame is the number 207 6 or possible G. On an upright heavy wooden part of the frame is the number 21299. We were told when we bought the piano that it is in a Rosewood case. It has two brass candle holders and decorative marquetry in the centre. Photos available if required. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Richard Hawkins first appears in London directories around 1890, and seems to have ceased trading after the 1914 war, so the piano may have been made around a century ago. No dates of serial numbers are available. Paterson, Sons & Co. became a Ltd. company in the twenties, so this piano seems to be before then, as is also suggested by the sconces (candleholders). Please do not post large photos on this forum, you can email them to me.

Bill

Thanks for all that information. We had no idea how old our piano is. All we knew is that it sounded and looked great.
