I am the owner of an early William Southwell square piano and am doing research on this important Anglo-Irish builder for a scholarly article.
If you own a Southwell pianoforte, I would appreciate hearing from you and discussing our instruments.

I'm sure we could have a useful exchange of information. If you have logged in, you can press the email button. Otherwise, type JUST the word pianogen into your internet address bar.

Dear George,
I too have an early Southwell, now in bits - it is signed 'Geo Cooke, May 7th 1808'. No idea who he is, except, I imagine him to be a Southwell employee. It is a five-and-a-half octave square, with a fancy nameboard and the wrong legs!
What do you know of Southwell? The websites say there are few archives of him, owing to a fire in Dublin which destroyed the records.

I feel like I'm butting in on a "private" conversation here, but quite a lot is known about Southwell's London activities, it's the Dublin work that is more of a problem. Certainly, my Dublin lists don't go back far enough to add much. The shortage of original archives is pretty general, see

To Peter Mole
Sorry to have taken SO long to get back to you. I actually now own 2 Southwell squares (ca. 1780s and 11 Oct. 1800) and have access to a 3rd here in Seattle, so I'm in a pretty good position to answer questions about that type of Southwell. I can also tell you where other Southwells are located.
Why don't we go now to direct email communication, so we can discuss details about our instruments? You can reach me at gbozarth@u.washington.edu.
Your Southwell is in pieces? How sad. Have you plans to try to restore it? I would like to include it in my catalogue of extant Southwells.
Best wishes,
George Bozarth

I wouldn't want to intrude on a private conversation, but if you have a list of extant Southwells, we may well be able to have a useful exchange of information.
