herrburger brooks regulating
I'm sure this must have come up before, but where can I find some information on regulating a Herrburger Brooks spring & loop grand action?
I have acquired a tired but useable baby grand which has the H/B action as shown on these pages here, and is in need of setting up properly (or as good as can be hoped for). I can find no information on the correct settings, order of adjustment etc. - can any one help?

OK because the action will be worn factory specs go out of the window
First take note of the key height in the top treble and bottom bass should be around 65mm from top of key to bottom of keybed you need to take the stack off the keybed 8 screws clean the keybed, Pro tec with silicon the bat pins and balance pins
You will now need to re level the natural keys to the 65 or what ever it was the sharps should be 12mm above the naturals next is depth of touch (dip) this should 9.5 However, I set them to 10mm the sharps should be 2mm above the naturals when at play. To do the above you will need some key weights Square the keys off as you go
Take any side play out of the key with the bat pin.
Put the stack back on the keys space the hammers to the strings some action only had an half blow some had a shift
Now set the Blow it should be set to 45mm unlike a normal grands the hammers should be on the rest rail, when at rest. You may have to replace the hammer rest baize or add to it, if the hammers have been refaced a lot you should set it for 47mm (some of the older ones were set to 50mm blow)
Now take up the lost motion buy turning the capstan on the key this should be done like an upright no lost motion and the hammers should not be off the rest rail recheck the level of the keys
Set off (Let off )
This should be set to 3mm in the treble and 4mm in the bottom bass However, if the blow is more than 47mm this will have to be set to 5mm and 6mm to adjust the set off you have to turn the set off button sometime quite rusty and you may have to heat up the wire with a soldering iron to free them
Checking this is set to 15mm the more you get this even the more even the piano will feel when playing this is adjusted by bending the checks ( if you can’t get it to check when playing soft you may have to increase the depth of touch of reduce the set off
Repetition springs they need to be strong enough to bring the jack back under the notch but not to strong that they interfere with checking again continuity makes an even touch
Teflon power on the notches makes a big difference to the touch
Dampers should lift when the key is 3rd depressed
Now start again getting it a bit better each time
Have fun they can be quite a responsive action better than most uprights of that age

Brilliant - thanks for that.
The blow distance at present seems to be about 2 1/8" which seems a bit excessive. The rest felt doesn't seem too worn. I have previously been adjusting the let off to 1 - 2mm but the let off buttons have been at the limit of their adjustment, setting them to give 5 or 6mm would solve this - or should I raise the hammer rest rail to give a blow nearer 45/46mm?

I would go for 47 this will bring you set off down from the 1 mm to3 ish because you will be rising the bottom section and bring the jack heal closer to the set off
Regulating worn actions is more down to a compromise to what will work best in the middle and the ends
A lot of these grands were no more than nice boxes with strings in more was spent on the case than the insides

just after I replied I was doing my dally skin pushers clean out and checked his www link and realised he was just trying to use this site to promote his site (Gambling) in Google.
But they dont get it! we have optimised this forum to hell and in doing so Google only sees what we want it to see, it cant see the www button or the sig in your post you have to be logged in to see them however, I still have to clean out the skin peddles as we do get children on the site, I would not like a young child to click on a profile then on a link in that profile to a skin peddler
