Kennerton & Son, London

I have recently been given a piano. It looks rather old. It has Kennerton & Son London engraved on it and another smaller plaque that says - Thomas Pollard with the word "Burney" underneath name. The piano stool is round with claws on the bottom of each leg and a marble under each claw.

Does anyone have any information on this piano?

Stools with cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet are not uncommon, and it doesn't help us with the piano, it may not even be the original stool. The name Kennerton is familiar to me, but I have nothing ready on computer, so I'll see what I can find on card and paper files.

Could "Burney" be Burnley? Thomas Pollard was a dealer in Burnley, Lancashire, but he was there for a very long time, from at least the 1880s to the 1950s, so doesn't help us with dates.

Thank you for responding. It is Burnley. I did call Hall Piano here in New Orleans and they have never heard of him. So at this point, how do I figure out how old it is? The entire piano is completely made of wood and is all handmade. Though back clothing is old and brittle, you can see that it is put together with wooden pegs as well. It is quite small for an upright. Probably about 4.5 feet. It's just absolutely beautiful. Thanks for helping me.

I have lists of London firms for every decade. I will look to see if the name appears there. If it does not. we may probably assume that it is an alias.

Around Britain, it was very common for dealers to buy in pianos from wholesalers, and put fake London names on them, because people wanted to buy London pianos. That may well be what Kennerton is. Have you looked at my Datemarks page at pianogen.org ?
