B Squire & son

Post by GG »

We have a B Squire & son piano and I was wondering if anyone could help us to put a date on it? The serial number is 16800. We are thinking about selling it/giving it away as we don't really have room for it and I was hoping the date would help us to decide what to do. I have seen the post about valuations and would look into getting a valuation if it is worth it. Many thanks for any help.

Where in the world are you? Around the 1870s, they were known as B. Squire and Sons (plural) but before and after that, they were "& son". No reliable information is available about dates of serial numbers, but this is probably before 1890. See

and the Reports page there.

We are in Elgin in the N-East of Scotland. I think I will probably get our local piano tuner to have a quick look at the piano and see if anyone would want to buy it. It is a beautiful looking piano but I'm not sure if it can be tuned properly for playing - I was told wooden framed old pianos don't tend to hold their tune and I don't know how true that is. If not I have seen your site and that you do valuations from pictures and we may try that if that is OK.

I do historical reports on design and approximate age, but not valuations. However, you may find it useful to read...

If it is a victorian piano, and proves to be unserviceable, I would appreciate it if you let me know before buying a box of matches and a gallon of paraffin!
