In 1865, William Avill went into partnership with Charles Smart, as AVILL & SMART, and around 1888, they became a limited company. The partnership seems to have finished in the 1890s. 1873 is mentioned on some of Maxwell's pianos, possibly the date they were established. By 1886, Glasgow directories show Peter Maxwell. By 1894, the firm was known as Peter Maxwell & Son. See
