do you know this tune

Post by Geminoz »

Hi there

When I was a kid many many moons ago we used to play it on all black keys...From fading memory I think it had words such as:-
Oh will you wash my fathers shirt
Oh will you wash it clean
Oh will you wash my fathers shirt
And dry it (or hang it) on the ??????? (can't remember the last word sorry).

...line. As in washing line; that's the last word. I think it would only rhyme if you sang it with a Geordie accent - even then not terribly well. Those are the words I know to the tune as well!

I've heard that tune sung to these words:

I dropped my dolly in the dirt
I asked my dolly if it hurt
and this is what my dolly said:

wah, wah, waah.

I remember kids playing that who didn't really "play" piano. :

Hi,

Yes, I dropped my dolly in the dirt seems to be the popular title, with the composer and lyrics (lyrics?) down as traditional.

I remember bashing the tune out many times on the black keys in my childhood, but never singing the words - they wouldn't seem right coming from a boy. Not in those days anyway.

Oh will you wash my father's shirt?
Oh will you wash it clean?
Oh will you wash my father's shirt
And hang it on the green?
