Creaking noise on U1TA2 Yamaha when sustain pedal used

Post by ando420 »

Hi,

I got a new U1TA2 Yamaha upright from the London Yamaha store a few years ago (between lockdowns). I had not played a real piano before (only electronics) - and it took me a while to get used the the sustain pedal. It's possible I was heavy with it when using it at first.

Unfortunately - it seems the piano developed a creaking noise when the sustain pedal is used (its more present with the lower octaves), regardless of how softly the sustain pedal is operated. There were also some super humid summers here in the UK a couple years ago - and I did not have a dehumidifier so its possible the piano could have absorbed a lot of moisture.

The Piano tuner and Yamaha technician told me that there wasn't really anything he could do - and that I just needed to be more gentle with the sustain pedal. I have tried this - but I've noticed the wood creaking noise (coming from the right leg of the piano) present even with the most gentle of sustain pedal usage. He did try taping some felt to the right side of the piano leg (hard to explain) that had a minimal effect of dampening the creaking noise.

Is there anything that can be done to help remove / reduce this noise? Or is the only real option if I want to be rid of this noise to replace the piano?

Thanks

It's one of 3 things: the springs are grating on the dumper bodies,
But the dump lift rail brackets in the bass section is creaking.
or it's a simple fix: the pedal push rod is grating in the dumper lift rail.

I'm sorry but the answer from Yamaha is a copout.

Both can be fixed by your tuner.
